In the early hours of March 24, 2003, a huge group of 32 “Longbow Apache” armed helicopters of the U.S. Army Aviation killed thousands of Iraqi troops in the southern suburbs of Baghdad. However, this helicopter unit was attacked back to the base before it saw the enemy. Two of the helicopters were shot down. This is the only battlefield retreat by the U.S. military in the Iraq war, giving the U.S. military a profound reflection on the principles of the use of armed helicopters, equipment research and development, and so forth.
