Objective To study the dynamic changes of peripheral blood B lymphocytes and natural killer (NK) cells in patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Methods Flow cytometry was used to determine the absolute count of peripheral blood B lymphocytes and NK cells in 602 SARS patients from 240 SARS patients. Results The counts of B lymphocytes and NK cells in patients with SARS were significantly lower than those in normal subjects (P <0.001). The patients with severe (very severe) were significantly lower than those in patients with normal (P <0.001). In the cured group, B lymphocytes in patients with SARS were at a low level at onset but increased at the second week after onset, and then gradually rose to normal levels as the condition recovered. However, NK cells have been at a low level at onset and continue to decline in the second week after onset. However, NK cells increased at the fifth week after onset but have not returned to normal levels. Conclusion The counts of B lymphocytes and NK cells in patients with SARS are related to the severity of illness. The determination of these two cell counts in patients with SARS can help to judge the prognosis.
