崇古观念很早就随着先民们的原始宗教意识的产生而出现了。在殷人的祖先崇拜、自然崇拜和上帝崇拜中无不体现了对生命本原的感激和对原点的依恋。原点崇拜造就了殷人的崇古情结。宗教祭仪使先民所生活的世界秩序化。在殷代政、教合一的政局下 ,宗教信仰及仪式为王权提供了整饬世俗秩序的规范 ,而王权则为信仰和仪式的延续提供了政治保障。商代王权自觉地利用人们的这种崇古心理为政治服务 ,在施政中一再强调“承于古”的重要性 ,从而使宗教意味很浓的崇古观念转化为对旧秩序具有强烈的精神依恋的复古精神
