In the past decade, the Indian software industry has maintained a momentum of rapid growth, with an annual growth rate of 42.3%. The share of export software is 54.31%, and its annual growth rate is 45.74%. The export of software has been developing at an alarming rate. Exports have only grown from US$24 million in 1985 to US$485 million in 1994-95 and US$650 million in 1995-96. The Indian software industry started in the 1970s. At that time, the Indian economy was completely controlled by the government and was very closed. The production and business activities implemented a licensing system and strictly restricted imports. Only companies exporting software allowed the introduction of computers during this period, and demanded that the total value of their export software must reach twice the value of computer imports within five years. This policy has actually played a role in inducing software companies to increase their software exports, and has enabled the Indian software industry to embark on the path of exports from a single step.
