The Russian-European confrontation in the Yukos case will increase people’s concerns about being bound by international laws. However, in the long run, international organizations represented by the Energy Charter are a favorable platform for China to seek energy security cooperation. Russia was punished by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, the Netherlands, for targeting the malicious taxation of Yukos oil companies in violation of the Energy Charter Treaty, involving compensation up to 50 billion U.S. dollars. This brought a wave of turmoil to the energy industry and caused everyone’s attention and discussion on the Energy Charter Treaty. In fact, China has always paid little attention to this multi-lateral treaty that is formulated to protect international energy investments. The Yukos case has drawn everyone’s attention.
