故事梗概：1882年，牛仔时代，查理、巴顿、莫斯和老板博斯·斯皮尔曼是生存在蛮荒时代尾声的拓荒者。放牧本是自由的工作，但随着更多人的到来，土地有了价值，放牧者渐渐成为不受欢迎的对象。镇上的土皇帝巴克斯特联合治安官设下圈套，以破坏秩序为名把莫斯揍了个半死，并且放出话来：不许斯皮尔曼等人再出现在小镇周围。被逼得走投无路的牛仔们只有拿起武器，为保护自己的生活方式豁出去一搏。

　　Boss: You know what they call that? Call it a decade. Long time. Been a lot of change since then.
　　Charlie: What’s on your mind, Boss?
　　Boss: Way I figure it, we can leave the cattle behind an’ run or you an’ me could go out there in the dark an’ stop ’em before they scatter the herd.
　　Charlie: You 3)reckon them cows worth getting killed over?
　　Boss: Well, cows is one thing, but one man tellin’ another man where he can go in this country’s somethin’ else. That rancher sat in that jailhouse 4)sorta 5)sneerin’ and lettin’ his lawman
　　6)lay down the law ’til he figured it was time to show us that he gave the orders around here. Whoo-oo, ②sticks in my craw.
　　Charlie: Well we sure as hell owe ’em for what they done to Mose.
　　Boss: Yeah.
　　Charlie: I’ll 7)saddle the horses.

　　(After the killing of Mose and the dog Tig, Button is badly
　　injured and left for dead. Charlie and Boss vow to avenge this injustice. As they are leaving the café after having a cup of coffee, they meet the marshal.)

　　Boss: An’ we’ll be havin’ more’n ’at with you, Marshal. No need to make the café messy with folks.
　　Marshal: I’ve got a 8)warrant sworn out for your arrest for assaultin’ Baxter’s men.
　　Boss: An’ we got a warrant sworn for attempted murder for them that tried to kill the boy who’s layin’ over there at the docks tryin’ to stay alive. Swore out another one for them that murdered the big fella you had in your cell, only ours ain’t
　　9)writ by no tin-star-bought-and-paid-for marshal. It’s writ by us. We aim to enforce it.
　　Marshal: Is that so?
　　Boss: We got no quarrel with none of you folks. Baxter’s men 10)bushwhacked our friend, shot him dead, shot a
　　16-year-old boy too, and clubbed him so hard, he might not live. Tried to take our cattle. Your marshal here ain’t gonna do nothin’ about it. You don’t like free-grazers in this town. We don’t much like being here. But a man’s got a right to protect his property and his life, and we ain’t lettin’ no rancher or his lawman take either. We got no intention o’ harmin’ by-standers.
　　Marshal: ④Anyone who helps or comforts these God damn law-breaking free-grazers is gonna have to deal with me.
　　Boss: Your call, Marshal.
　　Marshal: We don’t have to settle this here and now. You ain’t goin’ nowhere in this weather. But I’ll be seeing you gents real soon; you can count on that.

How you never look for no trouble and that kept me from trouble. But it’s found us here, Boss, an’ if we’re gonna have any chance, you…
　　Boss: You go on an’ talk, Charlie. I’ll hear ya.
　　Charlie: I’m almost certain they’ll be overly confident in their numbers, ’specially if we’re standing right out here in front of ’em. It’s not like we’ll have any advantage, but if they’re out there with us, then they won’t have as much as they might have otherwise. I don’t figure all of ’em to be killers; maybe only two or three like Butler will’ve done much of it. I’ll be lookin’ to him. The others’ll be hired men, probably, saddle tramps, maybe ex-army. Rest’ll be cow-punchers. They won’t want to line up in front of us. It’ll happen fast once I start, so just keep yourself moving forward an’ they’ll either move or root, maybe even freeze up; it don’t matter which. You just start right in on ’em with that scatter gun. When 12)yer done both barrels, just drop it where you stand, pull your pistol, an’ make a run for that building where we 13)stashed them others. I’ll be tryin’ to do the same if I can.

　　Charlie: Yeah, ’cept the part where we don’t get killed.

　　(After the battle, Charlie and Boss decide to give up the cattle business and settle down in Harmonville. Charlie is proposing marriage to Sue.)
　　Charlie: I’m in love with you, Sue. Been that way since I first laid eyes on ya. Just took me a while to see things clear. I know I’m not the kind of man ya’ expected to walk up your front walk, an’ if I was your brother, I wouldn’t choose me for you.
　　Sue: Charlie, do you know how old I am?
　　Charlie: Don’t care how old you are.
　　Sue: I’m not a girl anymore.
　　Charlie: You’re the handsomest woman I ever saw.
　　Sue: I’ve had my disappointments, Charlie.
　　Charlie: Well, I’m not gonna be one of them. I never thought I’d live as long as I have, Sue. I guess livin’ the way I have never really mattered. But ridin’ away thinkin’ I was never gonna see you again was maybe…it’s maybe the most awful feelin’ I ever had in my life. I know I can be a good husband to you, and I know I ain’t asked you proper, but I’m asking you now. Will you marry me, Sue?
　　Sue: Charlie, yes, I’ll marry you.

　　查理：我们一定要替莫斯报仇。
　　博斯：对。
　　查理：我去替马套上马鞍。
　　（莫斯和狗狗提格被杀，巴顿受重伤生命垂危，查理和博斯发誓要对这种不义的行为进行报复。正当他们喝完咖啡准备离开咖啡馆的时候，遇到了治安官。）
　　治安官：我有话要对你们两个说。
　　博斯：我们也有更多话要对你说，治安官。没必要引起餐馆人们的混乱。
　　治安官：我有签发逮捕你们的拘捕令。罪名是攻击巴克斯特的手下。
　　博斯：我们也有他们意图谋杀的拘捕令。罪名是他们企图杀害一个男孩，现在他正躺在医生家里，生命垂危。再说另一项吧，他们谋杀了之前关在你们牢房里的那个大个子。只是我们的拘捕令不是由一个花钱买来银锡星徽（指徽章）的治安官所写，它是由我们自己写的，而且我们打算执行到底。
　　治安官：是吗？
　　博斯：我们不跟你们在座任何一位发生争执，只是巴克斯特的手下攻击我们的朋友，并开枪打死了他，还对一个16岁的男孩开枪，毒打了他一顿，他很可能活不了了。他还企图夺取我们的牛群，你们这里这位治安官根本坐视不理。你不喜欢别人到此自由放牧，我们也不太喜欢呆在此处，但人有权保护私有财产以及自己的人身安全。我们不会让牧场主和他的执法者夺走任何一样。我们无意伤害局外人。
