湘潭锰矿属于浅海沉积的原生碳酸锰矿床,由一个“V”字形复式向斜和一个单斜组成。矿体呈层状,产于震旦系下部黑色页岩中,现开采向斜构造部分。矿层倾角一般为15~30°,局部达50°以上。矿层厚度变化大,主要矿层最薄为0~0.5米,最厚达6米以上,平均2米左右。矿层地质构造异常复杂,褶皱断裂现象严重,断层呈纵横交错分布。由于构造复杂,矿层底板起伏较大,矿层重复交错,局部厚度增大或变薄拉断。沿断层和矿层底板凸起处,往往出现条带状的无矿带。本矿是内因火灾甚为严重的矿山,
