The year 1990 was a special year for Sino-Italian relations. The relationship between China and the European Economic Community countries reflects this. The bilateral trade volume between China and the European Union countries decreased by 1.74% compared with 1989, while China’s exports to the European Community countries increased by 16.2% (equivalent to US$6.44 billion). During the same period, China’s imports from the European Community decreased by 11.3%. The bilateral trade between Italy and China has a similar situation: China’s imports from Italy have decreased by 41.7%, while China’s exports to Italy have increased by 16.8%, and bilateral trade volume totals 1.9 billion US dollars. With the exception of the Netherlands, China’s import reductions are among the highest in the European Community. This is a worrying number
