Objective: To investigate the differences of plasma leptin levels, blood glucose, insulin and blood lipids among normal and non-diabetic family members with first-degree relatives and their correlations. Methods: The fasting plasma leptin level, blood glucose, insulin and blood lipid were measured in 56 patients (35 normal first-degree relatives with a family history of diabetes mellitus) and 21 normal subjects without a family history of diabetes mellitus. Height, Body weight, body mass index (BMI), insulin sensitivity index. Results: There was no significant difference in leptin and blood glucose among first-degree relatives of diabetes mellitus and normal controls. Insulin and insulin sensitivity index were significantly different. Fasting leptin level is positively correlated with body mass index and insulin level, and negatively correlated with insulin sensitivity index. Conclusion: The first-degree relatives of diabetic patients had insulin resistance early. Leptin and obesity, insulin resistance are closely related, there may be a common risk factors between the two.
