The Lion
The lion is bold, fierce and very strong. The home of the largest lions is far away in the mountains and great plains of Africa. The lions also live in Asia, but there they are not so large and strong as the lions of Africa. The lion has a long mane(鬃毛) and his skin is of a yellow colour.
The lioness(母狮) is smaller than the lion and has no mane. She makes her home in the deepest part of the forest, and there she lives with her cubs(幼仔).
In the daytime the lion is in his den(兽穴). But when the sun is going down, he goes to hunt. He walks very softly and makes no noise. When the lion is very hungry, he may walk over the plains even in the daytime. There are many wild asses(驴) and antelopes(羚羊) in the plains. They feel that the lion is near and come near the place where the lion lies. The lion jumps on these animals and kills them.
The Brown Bear
The brown bear is a large animal. His coat is thick and rough. His neck is short. his head is big, and his tail is very short.
The brown bear lives in the forest. He likes to make his home in a hollow(中空的) tree. He eats wild fruit which he finds in the forest. He also likes honey(花蜜), and often spoils the hives(蜂巢) of the wild bees, and the brown bear finds them by the smell of the honey. When he finds a hive, he climbs the tree, and for hours and hours he gnaws(啃,咬) the bark(树皮). In this way he makes a hole in the tree, pushes his paw through it and gets the honey.
During the winter months the brown bear sleeps. He lies in a den where he makes a bed of leaves for himself. The snow comes and covers his den. He closes his eyes and sleeps there all winter. When spring comes the bear wakes up and begins to walk about the forest again.
The Butterfly
The butterfly is a very pretty insect. You won’t be surprised to know that this beautiful little insect is not born by a butterfly. At first it is a caterpillar(毛虫), then a chrysalis(蝶蛹) and only then a butterfly. And now you see what pretty wings it has to fly with!
Where do butterflies go in winter when snow lies on the ground?
Under the snow blanket, hiding under stones or logs our butterflies lie sleeping. Very many butterflies hide themselves in hollow trees, where they remain motionless(不动) all through the winter.
Some of our butterflies spend the winter months in the chrysalis form which they get out in the first warm days of early spring.
Most interesting are those that live all winter as very small caterpillars. They get out of the eggs which the female(雌的) butterflies laid in the late summer. These creatures live without food five or six months before they have anything to eat.
Where Do Butterflies Go When It Rains?
When it rains butterflies settle on the stems(花梗) of flowers or stalk(茎,秆) of grass. They hang head downwards with their wings folded(合拢) together over their backs. Most butterflies are difficult to see when their wings are closed, because the undersides have only pale colours and faint patterns(淡淡的花纹).
There are about 10000 known species(种) of butterfly. They range in size from less than an inch to the swallow-tails which live in north Australia and the Pacific islands and have a wing span of 10 inches. Most femal butterflies have less colourful wings than the males of the same species. They lay between 100 and 3000 eggs, according to the species, placing them on a plant which will provide suitable food for the caterpillars which develop from the eggs.
