The authors report that two cases of acute non-A, non-B hepatitis occurred in four members of a Japanese family. The first patient was a 47-year-old housewife who developed on June 1, 1977, and was admitted to hospital for acute non-A, non-B hepatitis. She was cared for and treated by her eldest daughter (22 years old) before and after she was hospitalized. The eldest daughter was three months apart from her mother (with photos) and also had acute non-A, non-B hepatitis, but her father and sister who lived together did not develop any symptoms of hepatitis and their liver function tests were normal. According to the author’s observation, two patients were found in this family. It was not caused by an outbreak of acute non-A, non-B hepatitis but by close contact with mother and daughter.
