1997年3月初,中国棋院和新体育杂志社联合举办新闻发布会,证实了一个传闻已久的消息:已经举办了十一届的NEC杯中日围棋擂台赛,自第十二届起“淡出”,取而代之的是NEC杯中日围棋对抗赛。 NEC杯中日围棋对抗赛包括三个部分,一是两国的NEC杯快棋赛冠军对抗;二是两国新秀赛冠军对抗,也就是年轻棋手的比赛;三是双方棋院推荐的女子棋手对抗。比赛每年进行一届,分两个阶段,轮流在中日两国举行,而原来延续全年的擂台赛的日程,被压缩到了两周时间。对抗赛虽不及擂台赛那么紧张刺激,但内容更丰富了。
