《美国地震学会通报》(B.S.S.A.)1979年8月第69卷第4期登载一则关于“美国地震学会第四次颁发奖章的通告”。通告说:美国地震学会依照学会章程第十二条和1975年年度选举细则设立了学会奖章。这个奖章表彰在地震学或地震工程学方面所作出的杰出贡献。1978年第四次颁发奖章,授予哈罗德·杰弗里斯爵士(Sir Harold Jeffre-ys)。现将赖朴吾(Ralph Lapwood)的《嘉奖致辞》和杰弗里斯本人的《获奖复信》摘译如下：
A.S.S.A. 1979. Volume 69, Number 4, 1979, a “Notice on the Fourth Medal of the Seismological Association of the United States.” The circular states: The American Seismological Society has established a Society Medal in accordance with Article XII of the Statutes of the Institute and the 1975 Election Rules. This medal honors outstanding contributions in seismology or earthquake engineering. Fourth medal awarded in 1978 to Sir Harold Jeffreys. Now Ralph Lapwood’s “Commendation Speech” and Jeffries himself “award-winning complex letter” extract as follows:
