After a fierce debate over the safety of genetically modified food crops, India’s Supreme Biotechnology Regulatory Authority publicly announced in early May 2017 that a genetically engineered mustard crop can be “safe to consume.” Whether such a GM crop can be handed over to farmers depends entirely on a political decision taken by the country’s environment minister, which may be awaiting the Supreme Court’s decision on several outstanding cases.
