Objective To investigate the effects of hypothermia on the hippocampal CA1 astrocytic response after transient global cerebral ischemia in gerbils. Methods Blocking bilateral common carotid arteries in gerbils for 20 minutes resulted in a model of complete cerebral ischemia. Experimental animals were randomly divided into sham operation group, ischemia-reperfusion group and mild hypothermia treatment group. Immunohistochemistry was used to label astrocytes. Results The number of GFAP positive astrocytes in hippocampal CA1 area increased gradually after reperfusion for 1 to 3 days and remained significantly higher than that of sham operation group on the 7th day after reperfusion. In low temperature treated animals, astrocyte responses were significantly inhibited. Conclusion Astrocyte responses play an important role in the development of ischemic brain injury. Mild hypothermia inhibits astrocyte responses may be responsible for its neuroprotective effects
