Children with cochlear implants have a potential risk of otitis media because children are at a high risk of acute otitis media (AOM), and implants may also infect adjacent tissues, spreading the infection along the electrodes to the cochlea. This article focuses on the correlation between cochlear implantation and otitis media in children and collects the complete data of 50 patients who underwent cochlear implantation at the Miami otology research center from 1991 to 1995.
