The reaction of basic dye cations with platinum group metal anions to form chromogenic ion complexes has been reported in the literature for the determination of platinum group metals by extraction and flotation spectrophotometry. The literature studies show that the stannous halides and platinum form [PtX_2 (SnX_3) _2] ~ (2-) complex anions in a hydrohalic acid medium in the presence of excess halide (X ~ -).
