水力旋流器与各种不同結构的離心分離器和離心机相比,其優點在於結構簡單和不發生流動鑛粒,从而使製造費与維持費降低。由於鍍液是在極大的人造压力下通过水力旋流器流動,因此,在水力旋流器中造成的流速要比水直徑螺旋分離器所造成的流速大得多。也就是說,它可以造成很大的沉降或分離最細鑛粒用的離心加速度。最初、水力旋流器曾用以濃縮稀薄的微細顆粒矿浆,以後才用來选煤和选鑛。用重介質选鑛時一利用水力旋流器可以旋别極細的鑛粒(達100網目或更微小)如用一般分離器時,可以進行分离的最低粒度則不能小於1~2公厘。最新結構的水力旋流器示第一圖。
