山西省五台山佛光寺祖师塔的建造年代目前存在从北魏到唐的多种说法,并无确切结论。本文从祖师塔所反映的佛教葬法与葬地两方面对祖师塔的塔主及年代展开研究,本文认为从葬法而言祖师塔是真身塔,从葬地而言祖师塔位于佛光寺寺内,以这两条条件和文献记载的佛光寺诸高僧的葬法及葬地加以印证,从而得出结论:祖师塔即隋唐间佛光寺高僧解脱禅师(562—642年)的真身塔,并从佛光寺布局发展的角度,推定祖师塔可能建造于八世纪上半叶。此外,本文还探讨了真身塔葬法的出现和天台宗高僧智顗(538—597年)以及与《法华经》的关系。
