Due to satellite communications systems, reliable command, control and communications networks and electronic jamming, electronic warfare equipment will dominate the battlefield of the future and, as a result, the next generation of weapons systems will rely more on electronic equipment. However, the rapid increase in defense funding provided for electronic equipment is expected to slow down in the latter years of the 1980s. Although the U.S. Department of Defense’s budget for electronic defense equipment has actually averaged 9% per annum over the first four years, the estimate for the next four years has averaged around 5% annually. Therefore, the major changes in the market for military electronic equipment are not about the overall rate of growth, but about the technologies and devices that will be financed and applied in future defense systems.
