辛亥革命前后到“五·四”新文化运动,十几年间,中国京剧史上,曾发生过一次京剧改良运动,其主要活动方式是编演新戏(特别是时装戏),宣传救国、民主新思想,它发端于上海,很快冲击北京,影响全国。上海京剧改良的健将是汪笑侬、王鸿寿(老三麻子)、潘月樵、冯子和、欧阳予倩、夏氏兄弟(月珊,月华、月润)等,在北京,高举这面大旗的是年轻的梅兰芳。
