MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous, non-coding, single-stranded RNA molecules of about 22 nucleotides in length that are highly conserved among species. miRNA molecules involved in the body many physiological and pathological processes, such as development, differentiation, apoptosis, cell proliferation and tumorigenesis. Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a heterogeneous clonal disease that originates from hematopoietic stem cells and is characterized by ineffective pathological hematopoiesis and high risk of leukemia. This article reviews the role of miRNAs in the pathogenesis and prognosis of MDS. Topics discussed include: miRNAs associated with the pathogenesis of MDS and miRNAs associated with the prognosis of MDS.
