2003年的10月29日，深秋的北京。冷风频袭着过往的路人。普通的行人并不知道，IT存储领域刚刚兴起的自动化网络存储将出现新的发展方向，一个全新的IT存储理念将在这个寒冷的深秋开始在中国的IT业界热起来。就在这一天，美国EMC公司总裁兼首席执行官乔·图斯先生风尘赴赴来到北京。在这位少年时代曾经梦想成为棒球运动员的CEO眼里，商场就如赛场一样，令人满意的结果永远只有一个，那就是通过团队的合作赢得比赛的胜利。为了在存储领域继续保持领导者的地位，图斯这次来中国的目的与以往三次不同，他为中国的存储领域带来了更新的理念，那就是时下正越来越热的信息生命周期管理。听习惯了美国人为推销新产品而制造出来的各种各样的理念，由不得许多人对信息生命周期管理抱着怀疑的态度冷眼旁观。对于广大中小企业用户来说，自动化网络存储尚且是一个不可触摸的事，而信息生命周期管理就似乎更加难以想象了。难怪人们不断质疑：信息生命周期管理来自用户的需求，还是厂商们卖解决方案的需求？要回答这个问题，首先让我们分别回顾一下存储的历史和存储巨头EMC公司的历史。从他们的历史中，我们可以看出存储在二十多年来走过的道路。在这条道路上，信息生命周期正成为越来越清晰的路标。

To answer this question, let’s first review the history of storage and the history of storage giant EMC Corp., respectively.
