Long ago it was discovered that trace element zinc has important biological roles in the growth and development of animals and plants and in various metabolic processes. Zinc-dependent enzymes in the body are widely involved in the metabolic process. DNA, RNA and protein synthesis and cell division, hormone and collagen metabolism are more closely related to zinc; zinc induces the synthesis of metallothionein, which plays an important role in the regulation of intestinal absorption of trace elements. The function of testis, thymus and growth hormone in animals and humans is related to zinc. Zinc also protects the integrity of cell membranes and antagonizes the damaging effects of radiation. T-lymphocytes (including T-helper cells, T-suppressor cells, T-effect cells and T-natural killer cells) are now known to be zinc-dependent and zinc has also been shown to function neutrophils
