从两千多年前的周代“六礼”开始,彩礼就在我国出现了。新中国成立后,彩礼的规制、多寡和内容也被烙上了鲜明的时代烙印。《礼记》有云:“男女无媒不交,无帛不相见。”此处的帛,也就是丝竹物,在先秦很长一段时间里可以充作货币。按照《礼记》,周代结婚要“有六礼,纳采、问名、纳吉、纳征、请期、亲迎”。一般认为,纳征就是交付彩礼。春秋时代称之为纳币,唐代称之为聘财,宋代以后开始广泛称为财礼,也就是沿用至今的彩礼。
