It has been known for almost a century that radial keratotomy (RK) will flatten the cornea and reduce myopia. Since the introduction of radial keratotomy (RK) in the United States by Bores in 1978, there have been many published studies documenting the effects of this procedure. The questions. about radial keratotomy today are not only quantitative but also qualitative in nature. We know this technique can flatten the cornea, but how reliably can the results be predicted? Does the patient benefit sufficiently from the results of surgery to justify the risks incurred? The answer to such questions must be founded on the data of published studies, which we will review, but ultimately will require a personal value judgement to be made by the individual patient prior to surgery.
