Objective To detect the harmful gases generated during the construction of tunnels and analyze the possible causes. Methods A certain section of construction tunnel was selected for blasting and air drilling. Two working surfaces were drilled to check the concentrations of harmful gases (carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and ammonia) on the working surface during operation; compared with the background of unworked tunnels. Results After 20 minutes of blasting explosion, the highest concentration of nitrogen oxides reached 1.8 mg / m3 and the highest ammonia concentration reached 0.42 mg / m3. During drilling, the highest nitrogen oxides reached 5.8 mg / m3 and the highest ammonia reached 0.97 mg / m3. The carbon monoxide in the two working surfaces did not contain high concentrations of sulfur dioxide. Conclusions The concentrations of ammonia nitrogen and nitrogen oxides in blasting and air drilling holes in the tunnel are high.
