[World Nuclear News Web Site June 20, 2014] Michael Heibel, Westinghouse’s technology project manager, said recently that it is possible that nuclear power operators will soon be able to monitor reactor core operations with sensors located in nuclear fuel rod assemblies condition. Westinghouse has patented this technology, which is still in development. Penn State University and Idaho National Laboratory (INL) are currently conducting related research and development. The research team is working on prototype equipment and plans to test it at the Breazeale Research Reactor in January 2015. Heibel said Westinghouse expects to bring the technology to market by 2019.
