This article introduces the methods and results of the research on the economic performance of foreign mobile satellite communications systems and the enlightenment we can draw from them. The GEO and LEO space segment costs around US $ 0.1 per minute, while the latter is slightly higher than the former; at the same time, the GEO’s geography has a lower cost compared to the global system Slightly higher than the latter; however, LEO’s regional system costs 6 times more space than its global system. Therefore, regional systems should not adopt LEO system. LEO system user traffic distribution is very uneven, the system’s total capacity is difficult to fully apply. It is estimated that only 1-2 LEO global commercial systems will be completed in 2000.
