Natures not much for subtlety (微妙). Just ask Chris Tangey, the man who watched in awe as a 100foothigh (30meterhigh) whirlwind (旋风) of fire tore around a patch of Australian Outback last Tuesday.
Tangey, a filmmaker, managed to capture some very rare footage of the startling phenomenon while he was out exploring locations near Alice Springs, Australia, according to The Australian.
One name for the event he recorded, a fire tornado, is a misnomer (误称), according to Mark Wysocki, New Yorks state climatologist and a professor of atmospheric sciences at Cornell University. The columns of spinning fire are much more similar to dust devils than tornadoes, Wysocki said.
“I would just call them ‘fire vortices’ but that doesnt sound so attractive to the public, so I would call them ‘fire devils’,” he told Lifes Little Mysteries.
Like the dust devils that spring up on clear, sunny days in the deserts of the Southwest, a fire devil is produced when a disproportionately hot patch of ground sends up a plume of heated air. But while dust devils find their heat source in the sun, fire devils arise from hot spots in preexisting wildfires.
“These plumes form in a very small region over the land,” Wysocki explained. “They start to rise very rapidly, and as things start to rise, they suck the surrounding air in like a vacuum. Then you get this twisting that begins to resemble a vortex (漩涡;旋风).”
As the vortex rises and sucks the blaze up with it, its diameter begins to shrink and, like an ice skater pulling in her limbs to gather speed in a spin, its rotation accelerates.
Though humans rarely witness fire devils, they may be more common than we think. Their most likely home, the blazing heart of a raging forest fire, is usually hidden from our view, Wysocki said.
Because fire devils are filmed even less often than theyre seen, not much is known on the range of dimensions and speeds the phenomena can take on. Wysocki speculates that, on average, they extend a hundred feet (30 m) or so into the air and rotate with a speed in excess of 22 miles per hour (35.4 kilometers per hour). Theyre usually gone within a minute of shooting up.
Tangeys film might help to improve meteorologists understanding of fire devils, according to Wysocki. He says a lot of scientists knowledge on the physics of tornadoes came from analyzing footage caught by storm chasers. 36. The text is intend to .
A. tell readers a rarely witnessed ‘fire devil’ is caught on film in Australia
B. tell readers how the natural phenomenon births
C. tell readers natures not much for subtlety
D. tell readers fire devils may be more common than people think
37. How does the ‘fire devil’ develop?

Just 30 minutes of walking can immediately lift the mood of depressed (抑郁的) patients, giving them the same quick pickmeup they may be seeking from cigarettes, caffeine or binge eating, a small study found.
Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin found that people suffering from depression who walked for 30 minutes reported feeling more energetic for up to an hour after completing the exercise.
Those patients and another group that sat quietly for 30 minutes both reported reductions in bad feelings such as tension (紧张), depression, anger and tiredness. But only the group that exercised said they felt good, according to the study published in the December issue of the journal, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. “The past research has found that exercise, along with the help of medicine, can help people overcome depression,” said John Bartholomew, a lead researcher.
However, Bartholomew is among the first to show that exercise can have a good effect right away.
The study involved 40 people between the ages of 18 and 55. All were recently suffering from major depressive disorder without taking medicine, and did not regularly exercise.
Twenty patients were asked to exercise for 30 minutes, while the others sat quietly for the same amount of time.
The good mood effects from walking were sizable, lifting their feelings of energy to nearnormal levels. But this kind of feeling was short, returning to preexercise levels within an hour.
“For people who are very depressed, that may not be something Im really going to hang my hat on,” said Dr. Erik Nelson, an assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. “But for patients who are less depressed, exercise may lessen feelings of helplessness and hopelessness,” he said.
43. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. It is one of Bartholomews first discoveries that walking does good to depressed patients.
B. Bartholomew is among the first to find walking can affect depressed patients positively at once.
C. Exercise was first found to be helpful to depressed people by Bartholomew.
D. Depressed patients can feel good immediately after a certain amount of exercise.
44. “Those patients” in Paragraph 3 refers to the patients who .
A. were used to regular exercise without medicine
B. were used to sitting rather than exercising
C. took 30 minutes of walking in the study
D. sat quietly for 30 minutes in the study
45. The underlined phrase “hang my hat on” in the last paragraph most probably means .
A. depend on B. discuss about
C. look into D. live on
46. We can conclude from the passage that .
A. only 30 minutes of walking will do to remove peoples depression
B. a certain amount of exercise can soon reduce peoples depression but it doesnt last long
C. the good effect of exercise is great enough to replace that of medicine
D. without exercise, depressed patients will never be able to recover

Are you happy? Do you remember a time when you were happy? Are you seeking happiness today? Many have sought a variety of sources for their feelings of happiness. Some have put their heart and effort into their work. Too many have turned to drugs and alcohol. Most of their efforts have a root in one common fact: people are looking for a lasting source of happiness. Unfortunately, I believe that happiness escapes many because they misunderstand the process and journey of finding it. I have heard many people say, “Ill be happy when I get my new promotion,” or “Ill be happy when I lose that extra 20 pounds.” The list goes on and on.
This thinking is dangerous because it presupposes (预料) that happiness is a “response” to having, being or doing something. In life, we all experience stimulus (刺激) and response. Stimulus is when a dog barks at you and bares his teeth. Response is when you prepare to run. Today, some people think that an expensive car is a stimulus. Happiness is a response. A great paying job is a stimulus. Happiness is a response. A loving relationship is a stimulus. Happiness is a response. This belief leaves us thinking and feeling:“Ill be happy when...”
It has been my finding that actually the opposite is true. I believe that happiness is a stimulus and response is what life brings to those who are truly happy. When we are happy, we tend to have more success in our work. When we are happy, people want to be around us and enjoy loving relationship. When we are happy, we more naturally take better care of our bodies and enjoy good health. Happiness is NOT a response—rather, it is a stimulus.
Happiness is not something that happens to us after we get something we want—we usually get things we want after we choose to be happy. I have made only one simple rule for my own happiness: Every day above ground is a good day. Therefore, I tend to have a lot of good (and happy) days continually.
47. Why does the writer think happiness escapes many people?
A. They find happiness in different ways.
B. They are working too hard.
C. They dont have a good habit.
D. They seek happiness in the wrong way.
48. What do the underlined words “this thinking” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Misunderstanding of happiness.
B. Getting promoted in the job.
C. Losing twenty pounds of weight.
D. Finding ones own happiness.
49. The writer strongly believes that happiness is .
A. a response
B. a stimulus
C. a feeling
D. your health
50. The purpose of writing this passage is to .
A. prove an idea
B. coach people
C. entertain readers
D. tell a story

There are good reasons to cherish our friendships. Some years ago a publicopinion research firm, Roper Starch Worldwide, asked 2007 people to identify one or two things that said the most about themselves. Friends far outranked homes, jobs, clothes and cars. “Ironically,” says Brant R. Burleson, professor of communication at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., “the better friends you are, the more likely youll face conflicts.” And the outcome can be what you dont want—an end to the relationship.
The good news is that most troubled friendships can be mended.
Swallow your pride. It wasnt easy, but thats what Denise Moreland of Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii did when a friendship turned sour. For nearly four months, Moreland, 45, had watched over Nora Huizengas two young daughters, who were living with their father on the base, while Huizenga, 40, completed training as a dental hygienist in Nevada. “I felt honored to be asked to step in,” Moreland says.
When Huizenga returned at Christmas, Moreland recalls, “I had so much to tell her, but she never called.”
One daughter had a birthday party, but Moreland wasnt invited. “I felt like Id been used,” she says.
At first, Moreland swore to avoid Huizenga. Then she decided to swallow her pride and let her friend know how she felt. Huizenga admitted that shed been so worried about being separated from her family that shed been blind to what her friend had done to help her. Today she says, “I would never have figured out what happened if Denise hadnt called me on it.”
When a friend hurts you, your instinct is to protect yourself. But that makes it harder to solve problems, explains William Wilmot, author of Relational Communication. “Most of us are relieved when differences are brought out in the open.”
Apologize when youre wrong—even if youve also been wronged. But over the course of a friendship, even the best people make mistakes. “We dont think clearly when were arguing,” says Michael Lang, a professional mediator in Pittsburgh. Instead, says Lang, ask, “Whats going on? This doesnt make sense.”
See things from your friends point of view. Sociologists Rebecca Adams Rosemary and Blieszner interviewed 53 adults who each had many friendships lasting decades. “We were curious how these people managed to sustain strong friendships for so long,” says Blieszner. Tolerance is key, the researchers learned. “Its surprising how often a dispute results from a simple misunderstanding,” adds psychotherapist Anne Frenkel.
Accept that friendships change. “Friendships change as our needs and lifestyles change,” Wilmot observes.
Making friends can sometimes seem easy, says Yager. The hard part is keeping the connections strong during the natural ups and downs that affect all relationships. Her suggestion: Consider friendship an honor and a gift, and worth the effort to treasure and nurture. Title: Keep on your friendships

Dear editor,
Im writing to tell you about a food poisoning incident. Several days ago, my neighbor family ate a bag of fake food from the market. After the meal, they had stomachaches and threw up what they had eaten as their faces turned pale. Fortunately, another neighbor found the accident and immediately called the ambulance. After several hours treatment they finally escaped from death.
Over the past years, the problem of food security has become a hot topic across society. Some illegal business men are only interested in making profits so they seldom care about the necessary safety measures or care what happens to consumers. Whats worse, the lack of adequate regulation and punishment on these illegal business men enforces the trend.
In my opinion, the government must take measures to forbid and punish these illegal producers. Meanwhile the whole society shall begin taking actions to protect peoples life safety. Only in this way, can people live a happy and healthy life. (151 words)

五、One possible version:
(151 words)
Yours,
Li Hua
