Siphon damage has a significant impact on accidental coolant loss in nuclear safety. The siphon failure process in the passive air-water two-phase flow system was studied experimentally. The flow process was observed and the pressure drop, the liquid flow rate and the liquid level change with time were measured. It is observed experimentally that the flow pattern of two-phase flow in the descending pipe section changes in order of bubble flow, slug flow and falling film flow with time. The experimental results show that the passive siphon damage system can significantly increase the pressure drop and reduce the liquid flow rate. Therefore, passive Siphon damage can reduce the risk of core exposure in coolant loss accidents.
