In patients with chronic renal failure, changes made by Monokine are a common feature and their clinical relevance has not yet been demonstrated. We show here that in these patients monocytes after stimulation with LPS, interleukin- 6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha overproduction associated with the clinical grade of immunodeficiency. High levels of interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor a lead to immune-tolerant states. This is not responsive to the Hepatitis B virus vaccine, however, cytokines in patients with good immunity are shown to be at the same level as healthy controls, with only patients with good immune function showing high interleukin-10
