“Tea Adorns Hangzhou, Poems Sing of Life” was the theme at the 2006 Get-Together for Spring Tea and Poems recently held in the International Tea People’s Village in Hangzhou. The event was sponsored by Zhejiang Poetry and Couplets Association, Zhejiang Online News, and Zhejiang International Tea People’s Home Foundation. Nearly 100 poets and celebrities from local arts circle gathered together to celebrate spring, spring tea, a poetic life in Hangzhou.
A poetic celebration of spring tea in Hangzhou is understandable and justifiable. China is a nation of poetry with a long history and timeless poets. Their brilliant masterpieces constitute part of our ancient civilization and have cultivated the national spirit and aesthetics. Tea is our national beverage and Hangzhou is the tea capital of the country. Tea and poems add radiance to each other. The history leaves us a legacy of over 2,000 poems about tea over centuries.
The celebration was attended by a few big names from tea and literary circles as well as poets from overseas. Cai Tianxin, a poet and professor with Zhejiang University, made a keynote speech. A doctor of art history from a French university recited poems about tea in several languages. A few avant-garde masters read and analyzed modern poems on tea. Poets from overseas also read their works.
