这不是一部众所周知的作品,但是遇上了,就不应错过。
《南方与北方》是19世纪英国著名小说家Elizabeth Gaskell(伊丽莎白·盖斯凯尔夫人)的作品。2004年,BBC经典原著改编系列把它搬上了银幕,顿时收获赞美无数。从口碑来说,在众多BBC经典改编系列剧中,它是唯一能与1995年版《傲慢与偏见》抗衡的。巧的是,故事中主人公的感情发展历程,从偏见开始,到求婚失败,到误会产生,再到最终冰释前嫌,也与《傲慢与偏见》有诸多相似之处,因此有人这么评价它:这是一部工业革命时期的“傲慢与偏见”。
然而这样的评价未免有失偏颇。《南方与北方》有别于其他描写英国田园式生活及爱情的小说,它着眼于工业革命时期的社会状态,描绘出一个社会进步、改革过程中地区之间的差异、阶级的纷争、意识形态的差别等等,而这些因素,也不断地影响着男女主人公爱情的发展。
通常名著改编的影视作品都因难以再现原著精髓而广受诟病,但在我看来,BBC版的《南方与北方》却是一部足以媲美甚至可以超越原著的作品。它磅礴大气又不失细腻优雅,人物形象塑造得饱满生动,而剧情之间的巧妙穿插和安排,都更加凸显故事性。另外不得不提的是,剧中的配乐荡气回肠,让人印象深刻。
本期“影视派对”特别截取了这部系列剧的几个片段,希望大家能从这些优雅又富有情感的对话中,感受这场十九世纪爱情的味道,也感受其中浓厚的文化韵味。特别值得提出的是,片中男主角约翰·桑顿操着一口典型英国北方口音:语速快、多连音、多卷舌;而女主角玛格丽特·豪尔则是字正腔圆、抑扬顿挫的英国南方口音。

偏见
剧情梗要:不是每一个爱情故事都源于一次愉悦的相遇。玛格丽特·豪尔跟随父母离开休闲舒适的英格兰南方,来到工业重镇—位于英格兰北方的米尔顿。她与工厂主约翰·桑顿的首次相遇便是在棉絮纷飞的工厂里。其时桑顿先生正因某个在工厂里吸烟的工人而大发脾气,他大打出手并毫不留情地开除了那位工人。这一切被玛格丽特看在眼里,记在心上。一个工业革命时期 “傲慢与偏见”式的故事正式拉开帷幕。
Mr. Hale: Mr. Thornton has been admiring our newly redecorated rooms, Maria.
Mrs. Hale: Oh. Yes, Mr. Thornton. Well, there wasn’t a great deal of choice, but these papers are of a similar shade to our drawing room in Helstone. But not quite.
Mr. Thornton: Well, on behalf of Milton taste, ①I’m glad we’ve almost passed muster.
Mrs. Hale: Yes. Yes, well...clearly, you’re very proud of Milton. My husband admires its energy and its...its people are very busy making their businesses successful.
Mr. Thornton: I won’t deny it. I’d rather be 1)toiling here, success or failure, than leading a dull, prosperous life in the South, with their slow, careless days of ease.
Margaret Hale: You are mistaken. You don’t know anything about the South. It…it may be a little less energetic in its pursuit of competitive trade, but then there is less suffering than I’ve seen in your mills. And all for what?
Mr. Thornton: We make cotton.
Margaret: Which no one wants to wear.
Mr. Thornton: I think that I might say that you do not know the North. We masters are not all the same, whatever your 2)prejudice against Milton men and their ways.
Margaret: I’ve seen the way you treat your men. You treat them as you wish, because they are beneath you.
Mr. Thornton: No, I do not.
Margaret: You’ve been blessed with good luck and fortune, but others have not.
Mr. Thornton: I do know something of hardship. 16 years ago, my father died in very miserable circumstances. I became the head of the family very quickly. I was taken out of school. I think that I might say that my only good luck was to have a mother of such strong will and 3)integrity. I went to work in a 4)draper’s shop, and my mother managed so that I could put three shillings aside a week. That taught me self-denial. Now I’m able to keep my mother in such comfort as her age requires, and I thank her every day for that early training. So, Miss Hale, I do not think that I was especially blessed with good fortune or luck. (Pause) ②I have outstayed my welcome.
Mr. Hale: Oh, no, John.
Mr. Thornton: Come, Miss Hale, ③let us part friends despite our differences. If we become more familiar with each other’s traditions, we may learn to be more tolerant, I think. (Mr. Thornton offers his hand but Margaret doesn’t shake it.)

剧情梗要:由于劳资纠纷,整个米尔顿地区的工人在工会领导下进行了大规模的罢工行动。桑顿先生不愿妥协,于是密谋从爱尔兰地区遣调一批工人,以维持工厂正常运行。谁料计划败露,一部分工人冲到桑顿先生的工厂前抗议。危难当前,玛格丽特挺身而出。
Crowd: Get the Irish out!
Mr. Thornton: Oh, my God! They’re going for the mill door!
Crowd: Get the Irish out!
Margaret: Oh, no! It’s Boucher!
Mr. Thornton: Let them yell. Keep up your courage for a few minutes longer, Miss Hale.
Margaret: I’m not afraid. But can’t you 5)pacify them?
Mr. Thornton: The soldiers will make them see reason.
Margaret: Reason? What kind of reason? Mr. Thornton, go down this instant and face them like a man. Speak to them as if they were human beings. They’re driven mad with hunger. Their children are starving. They don’t know what they’re doing. Go and save your innocent Irishmen. (Mr. Thornton walks out of the room.) Mr. Thornton, take care! (Mr. Thornton goes out but the furious workers don’t seem to be calmed. Margaret rushes out.) In God’s name, stop! Think of what you’re doing! He is only one man and you are many! Go home. The soldiers are coming. Go in peace. You shall have an answer to your complaints.
Crowd: Will you send the Irish home?
Mr. Thornton: Never! (to Margaret) Go inside! This is not your place!
Margaret: They will not want to hurt a woman.
Mr. Thornton: Go inside or I will take you!
(Margaret is hit by a stone and falls down.)
Mr. Thornton: Are you satisfied? You came here for me so kill me if that’s what you want!
(The soldiers come at last and the workers are scattered.)
群众:把爱尔兰人赶出去!
桑顿先生:噢,天啊!他们朝工厂大门
去了!

玛格丽特:噢,不!那是鲍彻!

求婚
剧情梗要:玛格丽特的受伤让桑顿先生再也无法隐藏内心的情感。在明知玛格丽特对自己并无爱意的情况下,仍然向她表明心迹。然而,彼此心中已存的偏见以及面对时代变化、面对罢工风潮的不同态度,成为两人最大的隔阂。
Mr. Thornton: I had not noticed the colour of this fruit. Miss Hale, I’m afraid I was very ungrateful yesterday.
Margaret: You have nothing to be grateful for.
Mr. Thornton: I think that I do.
Margaret: Well, I did only the least that anyone would have.
Mr. Thornton: That can’t be true.
Margaret: Well, I was, after all, responsible for placing you in danger. I would have done the same for any man there.
Mr. Thornton: Any man? So you approve of that violence? You think I got what I deserved?
Margaret: No, of course not! But they were desperate. I know if you were to talk to them…
Mr. Thornton: I forgot. You imagine them to be your friends.
Margaret: But if you were to be reasonable…
Mr. Thornton: Me? Are you saying that I’m unreasonable?
Margaret: If you would talk with them and not set the soldiers on them, I…I know they would…
Mr. Thornton: They will get what they deserve. Miss Hale, I didn’t just come here to thank you. I came because…I think it very likely…I know…I’ve never found myself in this position before. I don’t know how to find the words. Miss Hale, my feelings for you are very strong…
Margaret: Please, stop. Please don’t go any further.
Mr. Thornton: Excuse me?
Margaret: Please don’t continue in that way. It’s not the way of a gentleman.
Mr. Thornton: I’m well aware that in your eyes, at least, I’m not a gentleman. But I think I deserve to know why I am offensive.
Margaret: It offends me that you should speak to me as if it were your duty to rescue my reputation!
Mr. Thornton: I spoke to you about my feelings because I love you. I have no thought for your reputation!
Margaret: You think that because you are rich, and my father is in reduced circumstances, that you can have me for your possession? I suppose I should expect no less from someone in trade!
Mr. Thornton: I do not want to possess you! I wish to marry you because I love you!
Margaret: You shouldn’t, because I do not like you and never have.
Mr. Thornton: One minute we talk of the colour of fruit…the next of love. How does that happen?
Margaret: My friend Bessy Higgins is dying.
Mr. Thornton: And that, of course, is my fault, too?
Margaret: I’m sorry.
Mr. Thornton: For what? That you find my feelings for you offensive? Or that you assume because I’m in trade, I’m only capable of thinking in terms of buying and selling? Or that I take pleasure in sending my employees to an early grave?
Margaret: No! No, of course not. I…I’m sorry to be so blunt. I have not learnt how to…how to refuse. How to respond when a man talks to me as you just have.
Mr. Thornton: Oh, there are others? This happens to you every day? Of course, you must have to disappoint so many men that offer you their heart.
Margaret: Please understand, Mr. Thornton…
Mr. Thornton: I do understand. I understand you completely.

剧情梗要:豪尔夫人病危,玛格丽特不得不给因反抗暴戾长官而被政府通缉、潜逃在外的哥哥弗雷德里克写信,请他回来见母亲最后一面。然而这个不能说的秘密却让桑顿先生误会玛格丽特另有情人。在离开米尔顿的车站上,弗雷德里克与一位认出他身份的人发生了争执,对方滚下楼梯,最终死在医院里。这件事让玛格丽特卷入纠纷中,而当晚亲眼目睹了玛格丽特与弗雷德里克在站台上拥抱的桑顿先生出面平息了这场纠纷。

Margaret: Mr. Thornton, please... I’m aware of what you must think of me. I know how it must have appeared, being with a stranger so late at night. The man you saw me with, he...The...the secret is another person’s. I cannot explain it without doing him harm.
Mr. Hale: Is that you, John? Come on up.
Mr. Thornton: ④I have not the slightest wish to pry into the gentleman’s secrets. I’m only concerned as your father’s friend. I hope you realise that any foolish passion for you on my part is entirely over. I’m looking to the future.

Mrs. Thornton: Miss Hale will be in no mood for travelling back from London just to see your furnishings, Fanny.
Margaret: It was a while ago, but I’m sorry for the way I spoke to you at our last meeting. I know that you meant well.
Mr. Thornton: So, you’re going.
Margaret: I’ve brought you Father’s Plato. I thought that you might like it.
Mr. Thornton: I shall treasure it, as well as your father’s memory. He was a good friend to me. So you are going. And never come back?
Margaret: I wish you well, Mr. Thornton.
Mrs. Shaw (Margaret’s Aunt): I must get her home as soon as possible.
Mrs. Thornton: To be sure. As soon as possible.
(Margaret leaves the house. Mr. Thornton stands in front of the door and sees the carriage go away.)
Mr. Thornton: Look back. Look back at me.

Mr. Thornton: I found it in the 7)hedgerow. You have to look hard. Why were you in Milton?
Margaret: On business. Well, that is, I have a business 8)proposition. Oh, dear! I need Henry to help me explain.
Mr. Thornton: You don’t need Henry to explain.
Margaret: I…I have to get this right. It’s a business proposition. I have some 15,000 pounds. It is lying in the bank at present, earning very little interest. Now, my financial advisors tell me that if you were to take this money and use it to run Marlborough Mills, you could give me a very much better rate of interest. So, you see, it is only a business matter. ⑤You’d not be obliged to me in any way. ⑥It is you who would be doing…me the services. (The misunderstanding is finally erased and they kiss each other.)
Mr. Thornton: Coming home with me?

Margaret Hale: You are mistaken. You don’t know anything about the South. It…it may be a little less energetic in its pursuit of competitive trade, but then there is less suffering than I’ve seen in your mills. And all for what?
Mr. Thornton: We make cotton.
Margaret: Which no one wants to wear.
Mr. Thornton: I think that I might say that you do not know the North. We masters are not all the same, whatever your 2)prejudice against Milton men and their ways.
Margaret: I’ve seen the way you treat your men. You treat them as you wish, because they are beneath you.
Mr. Thornton: No, I do not.
Margaret: You’ve been blessed with good luck and fortune, but others have not.
Mr. Thornton: I do know something of hardship. 16 years ago, my father died in very miserable circumstances. I became the head of the family very quickly. I was taken out of school. I think that I might say that my only good luck was to have a mother of such strong will and 3)integrity. I went to work in a 4)draper’s shop, and my mother managed so that I could put three shillings aside a week. That taught me self-denial. Now I’m able to keep my mother in such comfort as her age requires, and I thank her every day for that early training. So, Miss Hale, I do not think that I was especially blessed with good fortune or luck. (Pause) ②I have outstayed my welcome.
Mr. Hale: Oh, no, John.
Mr. Thornton: Come, Miss Hale, ③let us part friends despite our differences. If we become more familiar with each other’s traditions, we may learn to be more tolerant, I think. (Mr. Thornton offers his hand but Margaret doesn’t shake it.)

Mr. Thornton: The soldiers will make them see reason.
Margaret: Reason? What kind of reason? Mr. Thornton, go down this instant and face them like a man. Speak to them as if they were human beings. They’re driven mad with hunger. Their children are starving. They don’t know what they’re doing. Go and save your innocent Irishmen. (Mr. Thornton walks out of the room.) Mr. Thornton, take care! (Mr. Thornton goes out but the furious workers don’t seem to be calmed. Margaret rushes out.) In God’s name, stop! Think of what you’re doing! He is only one man and you are many! Go home. The soldiers are coming. Go in peace. You shall have an answer to your complaints.
Crowd: Will you send the Irish home?
Mr. Thornton: Never! (to Margaret) Go inside! This is not your place!
Margaret: They will not want to hurt a woman.
Mr. Thornton: Go inside or I will take you!
(Margaret is hit by a stone and falls down.)
Mr. Thornton: Are you satisfied? You came here for me so kill me if that’s what you want!
(The soldiers come at last and the workers are scattered.)

Margaret: I’ve brought you Father’s Plato. I thought that you might like it.
