薛觉先和马师曾先生是粤剧的两大艺术流派宗师,不但在国内享有盛名,在海外华侨中亦深具影响。现在粤剧舞台上不少文武生及丑生,是师承薛、马,或受他们的流派艺术影响而对粤剧多有建树的。《人民戏剧》一九八○年十一期《薛觉先马师曾对粤剧革新的贡献》一文,对两位大师的艺术成就有所论述,然而该文在观点和史实上却有某些不实或欠妥之处,不得不冒昧作点补正。《贡献》没有说清薛、马两大师在新旧中国两个时代的两种不同的艺术变革。对他们在三十、四十年代领衔变革粤剧之得失缺乏正确的历史评价,回避了当年粤剧由于商业化侵蚀在艺术上混乱不堪的历史背景,不恰当地把他们某些糟粕很多的剧目如《白金龙》《璇宫艳
Xue Juxian and Mr. Ma Shi-tsang, the two major art schools in Cantonese opera, have enjoyed notable prestige in the country and have also exerted a profound influence on overseas Chinese. Many Cantonese opera and ugly students now live on the stage of the Cantonese opera. They are the masters of Xue and Ma, or influenced by their genre art. “The People’s Theater”, “XIONG JUE XIAN MA MAO’s Contribution to the Innovation of Cantonese Opera” in the eleventh issue of “The People’s Theater” discusses the artistic achievements of the two masters. However, the article has some inaccuracies Or defects, have to presumptuously make some corrections. “Contribution” did not say two different art changes between Xue and Ma both in the two ages of New and Old China. Lacked a correct historical assessment of their success or failure in leading the transformation of Cantonese opera in the 1930s and 1940s and avoided the historical turmoil of Cantonese opera due to commercial erosion in that year and inappropriately put some of their dastardly plays such as “ Platinum Dragon ”" Xuan Gong Yan
