相传清代雍正年间某个清明节,位于浙江平湖城关西门外的徐源源糟坊,主人家煎鱼烹肉,备船上坟祭祖。有个叫枣倌的学徒,年幼嘴馋,乘机偷藏一只鸭蛋,本打算等老板全家上船之后煮熟吃掉,谁知老板命他上船同去,枣倌在情急中把蛋按入一缸酒糟深处。直到中秋节前老板动用那缸酒糟蒸酒,才发现了这外硬壳已碎落却香气四溢的软壳蛋。
