被人们敬称为“根艺大王”的俞定远先生曾这样说过:“根艺创作有三难。第一是采料难;第二是相料难;第三是命名难。‘三难’之中,又数命名最难。”采料是一项相当艰苦的工作。好的根料,往往在高远险危之处(平地上是很难找到好根料的),需要具有胆量并付出相当的劳动。相料的难度不言而喻。对于一块根料,要想相出一点名堂来确实是不容易的,有的老练作者常常是把根料挂在墙上,相料时间竟长达半年之久甚至更长。
