In the rainforest of northern Guatemala, the ruins of the Tigat Tiger Temple are still standing tall, still talking about the glory of the ancient king of the city. On January 16, 378, a conquering army from Central Mexico placed Tikal as its primary goal, one of the oldest Mayan cities. During the 500 years that followed Tikal became a superpower, forming a coalition of enemies across the Maya. At Tikal and other sites, photographer Simon Norfolk took flood-lighting shots of the pictures after dark to avoid the shadow of the day.
