Persisting in long-distance running to prevent and cure arthritis Insisting on long-distance running may prevent arthritis. This is the conclusion drawn by the American scientist Sherlock observing the knee of a marathon runner with the aid of magnetic resonance imaging equipment. Sherlock found that athletes rarely experience cartilage tissue abnormalities and effusions even after completing 100 miles of long runs. Conversely, some recreational long-distance runners experience these physiological changes after 30 minutes of long-distance running. Presumably, the adaptability of “better biomechanics” and “long-term body training” allows marathon runners to not only run long distances but also maintain healthy and strong knees.
