1 Background Asymptomatic bacteriuria is defined as the presence of persistent urinary tract colonies, but lacks specific symptoms. The incidence among all pregnant women is between 5% and 10% (Whalley 1967). Infection is mostly associated with socioeconomic status, which is similar for both pregnant and non-pregnant women (Turck 1962; Whalley 1967).
