The Frontier Formation of the Moxa Dome in southwestern Wyoming provides an excellent illustration of the interactions between sedimentation, diagenesis and tectonics that affect reservoir properties and dynamics. During the Cretaceous, uplift and crustal overloading occurred in the Sevier orogen in the western foreland basin. During the deposition of the Frontier Formation, the Upper Blasting Rock provided a large amount of sediment for the Moxa dome. These sediments accumulate in the sedimentary environment of the polder facies of the Pollux delta, coastal plains, coastal plains and undercut valleys. The tectonic activity of the Sevier orogen causes periodic differential movement of rectangular basement blocks along the Moxa dome. These movements led to the formation of a linear crack pattern at the block boundary. In addition, the repeated movement of the basement blocks affected the Paleo-structure of the Frontier Formation, the migration path of diagenetic fluids and the sediment diffusion pattern. The sedimentary facies of the Frontier Formation controls the variation of the primary porosity and permeability of the Frontier Formation reservoir in the Moxa dome. The post-depositional fractures formed along the repeated differential movement of weak strata along the fault block boundary enhance the secondary permeability and dynamic characteristics of the Frontier Formation. The sedimentary facies of the Frontier Formation and the post-deposition fracture affect the diagenesis trend, which in turn affects the characteristics of the secondary porosity and permeability of the Frontier Formation reservoir along the Moxa dome. It is this complex interaction between sedimentation, tectonics and diagenesis that controls the reservoir characteristics of the Frontier Formation of the Moxa dome.
