如何有效地保护和合理利用地埂，已引起人们广泛关注。保护好地埂，有利于农田的保水保土保肥，开发地埂资源，发展地埂经济。紫花苜蓿不仅适应性强，耐旱耐瘠薄，繁殖力强，是保护地埂的先锋草种，而且营养价值较高，适口性好，是牲畜最喜食的牧草。据测定：地埂上生长的紫花苜蓿主根深度可达2～6m，侧、须根主要分布在0～30cm±层中；盘根错节起到了保持水土的作用，比对照埂减少土壤侵蚀95．86％；地上部生物量为9．73t／hm2，地下部为3．84t／hm2，年产干草量为16．57t／hm2，产值可达3314．80元／hm2。足见紫花苜蓿具有较强的护埂作用，同时又是良好的经济作物。
