Different cultural environments will have different living conditions, and this different state of life together is prone to conflict between civilizations. The United States is exactly such a multi-cultural country. However, cultural conflicts are bound to occur in an overly complicated social environment. An unstable factor in the social environment is an important cause of terrorist acts. This is particularly evident in “terrorists.” At the same time, “terrorists” also represent John Updike’s profound reflection on the good and evil of human nature in society after the “9.11” incident. John has a strong insight into the clash of civilizations in the cultural environment of the United States. In the end of the story, Ahmad’s good for evil has avoided a catastrophe, showing a forceful and energetic leap forward in human nature and proclaiming Only by taking the road of humanity and kindness can civilization coexist and the human spirit can be liberated.
