Trams to visit Santa Teresa is one of Rio de Janeiro’s most distinctive tourist routes. The tram to Santa Teresa, built in 1896, is the only tramway ever retained in the area. On the famous Monte Cristo, Santa Teresa used to be an area inhabited by rich people, intellectuals and artists, and gradually decayed. The yellow tram goes straight down the winding road to the top of the hill, with rows of Victorian mansions on either side of the tramway and graffiti on the walls. On the way, from time to time there are pedestrians jumping rapidly on the tram, grasping railings, body hanging in the car.
