在迁客骚人的诗词语言中,渔父的主题倍受推崇。当屈原在贫病交加中渡长江,过洞庭,徘徊于湘水、沅水时,第一次有了与渔父的相遇,渔父看到屈原痛苦的根源在于他崇高的原则,于是便给了他务实的建议:圣人不凝滞于物,而能与世推移。世人皆浊,何不淈其泥而扬其波?众人皆醉,何不哺其糟而歠其醨?何故深思高举,自令放为?尽管接受这个建议足以全身,但是屈原回答说,他宁愿葬身鱼腹,也不愿放弃自己的节操和原则。渔父笑着划桨离去,并唱起了一首歌曲,这支歌在后来的诗歌与绘画中回荡了两千年之久:
