Frey Otto set up the Institute of Light Structures (IL) in Stuttgart in 1964, at the time the building was constructed as a test structure for the German Pavilion at the 1967 Montreal World Expo. Today, the institute has a new name, “Light Architecture and Concept Design Institute” (ILEK), but it continues to study light structures. Werner Sobek, the successor to the Institute, described the development of IL to ILEK, reviewed the important historical events of Frey Otto’s life and introduced the latest research and teaching work.
