Lefebvrell and others believe that space is ideological. In racial context, space embodies racist ideology; in patriarchal context, space embodies the ideology of sexism. Black women in Toni Morrison’s novels were oppressed by the two ideologies of racism and sexism in their space, thus losing their self-awareness and identity and being marginalized and the other’s. But black women can also use the power of space to destroy hierarchical spaces and privileged spaces, rebuild their own space and reshape their identities. In this regard, Morrison made full attempts in the novel in an attempt to find a way out for black women in racial discrimination and gender oppression.
