我中华民族历来贵文字,孔子有“辞达”(《论语·卫吴公》)即文字要达意的教海,曾子更有“出辞气”“远鄙倍”(《论语·泰伯》)即为文要避免鄙陋粗野和错误的具体要求。中间虽有标榜“惟务养情性,其他则不学”的理学家,斥“为文”是“玩物”、“害道”和“俳优”(《二程遗书》卷一八)。但是,到了清代,学人又已将这种观点斥为“陋懦不学”而重新主张“以文为贵”、“文欲其工”了;并论证之曰:“文固所以载理,文不备、则理不明也。
