Zero-emissions energy supply system The Beddington community uses cogeneration systems to provide residential electricity and hot water for residents. Instead of using natural gas and electricity, cogeneration plants generate electricity using wood waste. First, wood chips are automatically fed from the storage area into the dryer and then from the dryer into the gas generator, where they are heated in a confined air stream and then converted to a combustible gas containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane by the gasification process. The projected demand for small pieces is 1,100 tons per year, with sources including wood waste in the surrounding area and neighboring fast-growing forests. The community has a three-year-old 70-hectare fast-growing forest that cuts down one-third of each year and replants new saplings to recycle. The tree absorbs carbon dioxide during its growth and is released in equal amounts during the combustion process.
