The mouse weight gain test (MWGT) is a widely used Bordetella pertussis vaccine toxicity test. During MWGT, body weight changes at different times in mice were related to different components of the vaccine. For example, weight loss at 24 hours after injection of the vaccine was related to the level of lipopolysaccharide (LPS); late-stage weight loss was associated with pertussis toxin (PT) content. Past research has been done with partially purified components. In this paper, highly purified PT, LPS and filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA) were tested individually and in combination to determine the contribution of each component in MWGT.
